Cajah Reed, PhD is a Denver-based lace artist whose work combines traditional lace techniques with experimentation in material, scale, and technology.
She works in bobbin lace, needle lace, and tatting, with a practice grounded in the study of traditional lace. Her choice of materials ranges from cotton and silk to fishing line, wire, grocery bags, spun plastics, and natural materials.
Cajah’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Denver Art Museum, Bard Graduate Center Gallery in New York City, the World Lace Festival in Bobowa, Poland, and juried fiber exhibitions throughout the United States. She received awards from the Handweavers Guild of America, Warwick Center for the Arts, South Florida Surface Design Association, and Fiber Artists of San Antonio. Her lace is also held in private collections.
In addition to her lacemaking, Cajah is actively involved in the larger lace community. She participates in local, national, and international lace organizations, studies historic lace, contributes to lace research and publications, and shares her work through presentations, demonstrations, and social media. Her interest in the history of lace is matched by a curiosity about what lace might become.
Thread Testing for Lace Making
Cajah is also the author and researcher behind Thread Testing for Lace Making: A Practical Reference for Thread Selection and Scale. It is an ongoing research project examining the relationship between thread, lace structure, and scale. The project uses graduated lace patterns to test traditional and unconventional threads across multiple types of lace.
