Most of your questions are answered here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100516223306AAHNY2H and http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AtVc8znRrlRdYqlm02KFETbty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100423044254AAnGzFy&show=7#profile-info-OKJf8nHFaa

1. The amount of fuss you need to go through to make a buttonhole is proportional to the number of steps.
4. An automatic needle threader is a gadget that is supposed to thread the sewing machine needle for you; usually breaks quickly.
6. The ability to sew with a special needle, to produce two lines of sewing simultaneously. Most modern zigzag-capable machines can do this.
7. Something that brings up some canned information on a screen when you enter some data. Usually ignored as soon as you’ve got a bit of experience.
8. A bobbin that loads like this: http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/22801244 as opposed to a bobbin you put in a bobbin case and then load the bobbin case.
9. A foot pedal with a circuit board in it to control how fast you stitch, as opposed to an electrical one.
10 and 12 are the same thing: the ability to lower the feed dogs so you can steer the fabric for special purposes like darning or quilting, instead of letting the machine move the fabric for you.
11. How hard the presser foot pushes on the fabric. I won’t buy a machine without that adjustment, it’s just too useful.

Go to a real sewing machine dealer and try out some machines. You’ll learn a lot as you’re doing so. Better yet, take a beginning sewing class where the school provides machines, and then go shopping for your first machine.
